Camping stories, advice and outdoor living

  1. Just saw the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona. Cars, if you can call them that, travel over 300 mph. Very, Very cool.
  2. I just spent 3 very windy nights at El Capitan State Beach camping with my son and his buddy. We had site 83 (insider tip: sites 82-84 offer ocean front views and are spectacular!) The boys were pretty wind battered by the third day, but they had a great time climbing the tree on our campsite and kept themselves pretty busy for the first two days we were there. El Capitan is a great place to ride your bike. You can explore creeks, tide pools and high ocean bluffs. This is one of our favorite camping sites and is great for kids. The place is loaded with them (kids that is) The beach is great here - but watch out for naturally occurring tar balls. Take the bike trail down from the entrance and go left when you hit the ocean. You'll ride past some picnic table and then come to a creek that ends in the ocean. The water is ice cold even in summer and a blast for the kids to wade in - depending on the flow. It was gushing pretty good last week (end of April)
